Biodegradable plastics refer to plastics that can be broken down by microorganisms into water, carbon dioxide, and other substances under specific conditions (such as high temperature and humidity in industrial composting facilities), ultimately returning to nature. However, <\/span>the key lies in the \"specific conditions.\" <\/span><\/span>means that in typical natural environments\u2014such as soil, oceans, or landfills\u2014their decomposition is extremely slow, often behaving like regular plastic, and thus failing to truly achieve environmental sustainability.<\/p>

    1. Fully biodegradable plastics (such as PLA and PBS)<\/strong>: This types of straws <\/span>look almost identical to conventional plastics<\/span>, commonly transparent. For example, PLA straws, although made from plants like corn or sugarcane, are polymerized, meaning their chemical structure is still that of a polymer. In Taiwan, they are still classified as <\/span>OTHERS<\/span>. The main issue with these products is that they require strict decomposition conditions (as mentioned in Guideline 1). In typical environments, they do not break down, effectively behaving like regular plastic waste.<\/li>\n\n
    2. Biodegradable plastics blended with plant fibers (such as plant fiber straws)<\/strong>: These straws incorporate residues such as tea grounds, coffee grounds, sugarcane bagasse, or pineapple waste <\/span>into biodegradable plastics <\/span><\/span>and then are remolded.
      They are often marketed under the label of \u201cplant fiber\u201d, which sounds very natural and eco-friendly. However, <\/span>their essence still contains plastic components \u2014 only with a reduced amount of plastic. <\/span><\/span>More importantly, in order to reshape the loose fibers, the manufacturing process may involve adding <\/span>chemical adhesives<\/span>, it's <\/span>ingredients are often opaque <\/span><\/span>may contain potentially harmful chemicals, raising health concerns.<\/li><\/ol>

      Regardless of the type, they may all face the following issues:<\/p>

      • Chemical additives: <\/span><\/strong> Besides the aforementioned adhesives, such as\u00a0paper straw <\/span><\/span>In order to make them waterproof, potentially harmful chemicals like PFAS may be added, as well as fluorescent agents, bleaches, and others. These substances are not only harmful to the environment but can also leach into beverages upon contact, posing potential risks to human health, while at the same time <\/span>producing microplastics during the decomposition process<\/span>.<\/li>\n\n
      • Microplastic risks:<\/strong> No matter what types of \u201cbiodegradable\u201d plastic, when decomposition is slow or incomplete, it can break down into tiny microplastic particles that enter the environment and the food chain.<\/li><\/ul>

In addition, these straws also face shelf-life challenges, with some manufacturers reporting that even unopened products can start to become brittle after six months to a year.<\/p>
